Garden City, KS-In his two years in Garden City, linebacker Gabe Luyanda has found a way to save his best stuff for the biggest games.
Last year, it happened vs. Butler; a nine-tackle, four-sack performance that helped the Broncbusters take down the top-ranked Grizzlies. His showing earned him conference player of the week honors.
On Saturday vs. Iowa Western, Luyanda's game-changing interception return for a touchdown gave the brown and gold a 14-3 lead in the third quarter. He added seven tackles and a quarterback hurry, and on Tuesday, was named the Jayhawk Conference Defensive Player of the Week nearly 365 days after his heroics against Butler.
"That interception by Gabe was unbelievable," Sims said. "He didn't just make the pick, he found a way to get into the end zone. That's incredible."
Luyanda, who holds offers from Central Florida and Arkansas State, is fourth on the team with 41 tackles.
No. 1 Garden City travels to No. 12 Dodge City on Saturday.
