Ivan Leal enters into his 3rd season at GCCC. In Leal’s 2nd season he helped guide the Buster’s to a 21-12 record and a trip to the Region VI Semifinals falling to eventual champion Coffeyville. The Busters set two new team records for made 3’s in a season (262) and made 3’s in a game (17) vs Colby. Individually Jeff Otchere was the Defensive Player of the Year and lead the nation in blocked shots (124). Pierre Johnson lead the Jayhawk in assists 5.6 per game and was Honorable Mention all-Conference. Kendale Hampton was #2 in Region V1 in made 3’s (81) and netted 2nd team all-conference selection. Jamir Thomas was a 1st Team All Jayhawk and fellow freshman Russhard Cruickshank lead region VI in 3’s made (87). Jeff Otchere (Stony Brooke), Pierre Johnson (University of New Orleans), Kendale Hampton (Youngstown State), and Elvis Harvey (Nicholls State) moved on to Division 1 programs.
In his first season, Leal helped the Busters reach a 16-15 overall record that featured 4 All Conference selections and 8 players sent to Division 1 and Division 2 programs. Prior to GCCC, Leal served as an Assistant Coach at Manhattan High School during the 2015-2016 season. In addition to this he played important roles with Kansas State University Women’s Basketball program as a scout team player and worked with the sports ministry Called to Greatness, which is led by Wayne Simien, an All-American at Kansas (2004 & 2005) and NBA Champion with the Miami Heat (2006).
Leal’s mission is to implement the original intent for the game of basketball, which is a ministry tool to share the love of Christ. Leal values the role of sports in developing young boys into godly men, husbands, fathers, and members of society. His responsibilities include recruiting, scouting, player development, travel coordination, practice planning, strength and conditioning, and on floor coaching.
He graduated in 2016 from Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. He is the son of Juan Leal and Melly Orozco of Garden City, KS
