Women inch closer to postseason berth; shutout NW Tech

Goodland, KS-It's been five years since the Garden City women's soccer program tasted postseason success.

Head Coach Charles Long hopes that long drought is over. And Wednesday afternoon definitely helped his team's cause.

Vanessa Delarosa-Herrera scored three times, and the Broncbuster defense played inspired en route to a 5-0 victory over Northwest Tech.

"We're getting closer," Long said. "We should be in the four spot."

Garden City improved to 6-5 in conferrence play, giving them a six-point lead over rival Dodge City for the fourth and final playoff spot in Region VI (the Lady Conquistadors lost to Barton 3-2). Dodge plays Hesston this weekend, and a loss or a draw clinches a postseason ticket for the brown and gold.

"It's what we've been working towards all season," Long said. "Now we need to finish."

Garden City still needs to take care of their own business, including a showdown with 15th-ranked Hutchinson on Friday at home.

"They're good," Long said in reference to the Blue Dragons. "They will be the best team we've faced all season."

Garden City made sure their match with Tech was drama free.

Delarosa-Herrera scored three times in the first 45 minutes (10th, 35th and 45th), getting some help from teammate Kelly Ramirez in the 35th for a 4-0 halftime lead. Sierra Riveria capped the scorring with a goal in the 72nd, completing the Broncbusters second shutout of the season.

The loss dropped Northwest Tech to 2-9-1 overall and 2-8 in the Region VI.
