Early Lead Slips Away as Garden City Falls to Otero in Game 1

La Junta, CO – Garden City Community College jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off a pair of big innings from Otero College, falling 9-5 in Game 1 of a conference doubleheader Tuesday.
The Broncbusters (Game 1) controlled the early portion of the game, building a 5-0 lead through five innings before Otero erupted for nine unanswered runs across the fifth and sixth innings to take control.
Garden City struck first in the second inning when Justin Bush delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home Karson Evans for a 1-0 lead. The Broncbusters added three more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Evans and a run scored on a wild pitch to extend the advantage to 4-0.
The offense added another run in the fifth inning when Sawyer Marshall tripled and later scored on an RBI single by Damon Hernandez, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Otero answered in a big way in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on timely hitting and a Garden City error to plate five runs and tie the game. The momentum continued into the sixth, where Otero added four more runs, highlighted by a two-run triple and a two-run double, to take a 9-5 lead.
Garden City threatened late, collecting nine hits on the day, including multi-hit efforts from Hernandez and Evans, but could not push across any runs over the final two innings.
