Colby, KS – Garden City Community College mounted a late offensive surge but could not overcome an early deficit, falling 17-15 to Colby Community College in Game 2 of a road doubleheader Saturday.
The Broncbusters (18-28, 9-15) dropped both games on the day despite a 17-hit performance and a pair of big innings late that nearly completed the comeback.
Garden City wasted no time getting on the board, striking for two runs in the first inning behind a two-run home run from Karson Evans. The Broncbusters added two more in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Cael Hamrick, to take an early 4-3 lead.
Colby responded with power throughout the middle innings, using a three-run third inning and adding three more in both the fifth and sixth to build a commanding 15-4 advantage. The Trojans capitalized on multiple home runs and timely hitting to create separation.
Trailing by double digits, Garden City refused to go away. The Broncbusters erupted for six runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded three-run double from Hamrick that trimmed the deficit to 15-10.
Garden City continued to chip away, adding a run in the eighth before a four-run ninth inning brought the game within striking distance. Riley Bowman launched a two-run home run, and Aiden Roberts followed with a two-run shot to cut the deficit, and even the score.
However, Colby answered in the bottom half with a two-run home run to halt the rally and secure the sweep.
Offensively, the Broncbusters totaled 15 runs on 17 hits, with Hamrick driving in five runs to lead the charge. Evans and Roberts each homered, while Bowman added a late two-run blast as part of the ninth-inning push.
