HUTCHINSON, KS – Garden City Community College was held scoreless on Saturday afternoon, falling 8-0 to Hutchinson Community College in Game 1 of a road doubleheader at Hobart-Detter Field.
The Broncbusters were limited to just four hits in the contest, while Hutchinson capitalized on timely extra-base hits to steadily build separation.
Garden City threatened early in the first inning. Aiden Roberts led off with a single and later advanced to third, but the Broncbusters were unable to push a run across, setting the tone for a day where opportunities were limited.
Hutchinson struck first in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs on a pair of RBI hits to take an early 2-0 lead. The Blue Dragons added to their advantage in the third, using a two-run home run from Jackson Schanuel to extend the lead to 4-0.
The momentum continued in the fourth inning when Diesel Purnell launched a two-run homer to right, pushing the margin to 6-0. Hutchinson tacked on two more runs in the fifth behind a two-RBI double from Cru Huenfeld, capping the scoring at 8-0.
On the mound, Noah Humphreys took the loss after allowing six runs over four innings, while Peyton Seelye and Gabe Grandy combined to cover the final two frames. Grandy provided a bright spot out of the bullpen, striking out two in a scoreless inning of relief.
Offensively, the Broncbusters saw hits from Roberts, Mason Tafoya, Sean Togher, and Karson Evans, but could not string together sustained rallies against Hutchinson pitching, which struck out nine and allowed just four hits in the shutout.
Hutchinson was paced by Jordan Kuhnau, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, while Schanuel and Huenfeld each drove in three runs to lead the offensive effort.
Key Moment
Hutchinson's two-run home run in the third inning extended the lead and shifted control firmly in favor of the Blue Dragons.
Key Stat
