Former Broncbuster Terry Wilson named starting quarterback at Kentucky
By Mike Pilosof
Lexington, KY-Terry Wilson is used to being pushed.
In 2016, He lost a two-man quarterback battle to Justin Herbert at Oregon. The following season, Wilson beat out Tylin Oden and Ray Bartlett to claim the starting job at Garden City. And after Monday's announcement, Wilson's ascension is complete.
The No. 1 rated Junior College quarterback, who guided the Broncbusters to an 8-4 record last year, was named the starting signal caller at Kentucky beating out Gunnar Hoak, a three-star prospect.
"We're excited about Terry," Head Coach Mark Stoops said during his weekly press conference.
Wilson is coming off a season in which he threw for 2,113 yards and was named the Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He tossed 26 touchdown passes while running for 518 yards and five scores. The Oklahoma City-native threw for a season-high 358 yards and four touchdowns vs. Hutchinson. He had 337 and four scores vs. No. 8 Trinity Valley in the Heart of Texas Bowl.
In the end, it was the dual-threat aspect that won Wilson the job.
"He was clocked faster than some of the receivers and some of the defensive backs in practices," Stoops added.
Neither Wilson nor Hoak stood out in the Wildcats' spring game; Wilson finished 10-of-24 for 131 yards and a pick. But he showed his wheels with a dazzling 17-yard sprint.
Kentucky opens the season Saturday, Sept. 1 vs. Central Michigan. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m.
