Garden City Native, Alex Acosta Named New Men's and Women's Golf Coach
Garden City Community College has announced the hiring of Alex Acosta as the next head coach of the Broncbuster golf program.
A Garden City native with a proven record of building competitive programs, Acosta returns home after successful collegiate coaching stops at Texas A&M University–Victoria and Otero College.
"Alex has demonstrated throughout his career the ability to build programs the right way," said Garden City Community College Director of Athletics Mike Pilosof. "From developing nationally competitive teams to mentoring student-athletes academically and personally, he understands what it takes to create a sustainable winning culture. We are excited to welcome Alex back home and look forward to the future of Broncbuster golf under his leadership."
Acosta most recently served as the Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach at Texas A&M University–Victoria, where he was hired in August 2025 to lead the Jaguars' golf programs. In addition to coaching, Acosta has been actively involved within the profession, serving as a member of the Golf Coaches Association and Women's Golf Coaches Association, while also participating on the NAIA Coaches Poll Committee. He is currently working toward completing his Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certification.
"I'm extremely grateful to be back in Garden City and take over the golf programs at Garden City Community College," Acosta said. "I'm excited to get back to family and friends who are still in the area and begin building something special here."
Prior to Texas A&M–Victoria, Acosta spent three seasons as the head men's and women's golf coach at Otero College (NJCAA) in La Junta, Colorado, where he elevated the Rattlers into national contenders.
During his tenure, Acosta guided both programs to multiple NJCAA National Championship appearances, including helping the women's program end a five-year national tournament drought while leading the men's team to back-to-back national championship appearances for the first time in program history.
Under Acosta's leadership, the Rattlers women's team captured three consecutive Region IX championships from 2023–2025, while the men's team finished as conference runner-up in each of his three seasons.
Both programs also earned national recognition in the NJCAA rankings during his tenure, with the women climbing as high as No. 16 nationally while the men reached No. 20, marking the first time the Rattlers' men's program appeared in the national rankings.
Acosta's teams also excelled academically and individually, producing two PING All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans, while helping every student-athlete in the program continue their careers at four-year institutions across NCAA Division I, II, and NAIA programs.
"We will develop and bring the right student-athletes to be a part of the Garden City community, and we will make sure they are world-ready when they leave our program," Acosta said. "The Jayhawk Conference is one of the best conferences in the country for collegiate golf, and we are excited for the challenge that comes with competing at that level."
Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Acosta served as a teacher and multi-sport coach in USD 457 in Garden City, working with golf, soccer, and football programs while also serving the community as a KSHSAA official and youth sports volunteer.
A Garden City native, Acosta graduated from Garden City High School after spending one year at Skyline High School in Longmont, Colorado.
As a student-athlete, Acosta played two seasons at Lamar Community College before transferring to Fort Hays State University, where he completed his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and graduated Cum Laude. While at Lamar, he earned NJCAA Academic All-American honors.
"It is time to bring a national championship to Garden City," Acosta said. "The resources here are second to none, and having two of the best golf courses in the state as our home in Buffalo Dunes and Southwind Country Club gives our student-athletes an incredible opportunity. We will work hard to continue moving both programs forward in the classroom, in the community, and nationally."
