Dodge City Uses Big Innings to Down Broncbusters in Game 2

Garden City, KS – Garden City Community College could not recover from a pair of big innings by Dodge City Community College, falling 19-6 in Game 2 of a conference doubleheader Wednesday at home.
The Broncbusters (22-19, 9-10) kept pace early but were undone by a five-run second and a six-run third inning from Dodge City, which seized control and never looked back.
Dodge City struck first in the opening inning with a pair of home runs to take a 3-0 lead, but Garden City answered in the bottom half. Maysen Kurene-Iwikau delivered a two-run home run to highlight a three-run response that tied the game at 3-3.
The Conquistadors regained momentum in the second inning, plating five runs on three hits, including a grand slam that pushed the lead to 8-3. Dodge City followed with its biggest inning of the day in the third, scoring six runs on six hits to extend the advantage to 14-3.
After a quiet stretch in the middle innings, Dodge City added five more runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Garden City showed life late in the fifth inning, stringing together four hits. Danna Viera doubled and later scored, while Maiarangi Waipara and Zoey Torres each delivered RBI hits to help the Broncbusters plate three runs and trim the deficit to 19-6.
Kurene-Iwikau led the offense with a home run and two RBI, while Viera added a triple and a double as part of a multi-hit performance. Waipara and Torres each drove in runs in the fifth inning, and Izzy Foster contributed a hit in the late rally.
