Garden City, KS-It was all about power in game two.
Savanna Griebling smashed a pair of home runs, Nya Chacon also went yard, and Garden City completed a two-game sweep of Seward County with a 13-7 victory Tuesday afternoon at Tangeman Sports Complex. The Broncbusters improved to 15-21 overall and 9-11 in conference play.
The home team dug themselves out of a 6-0 hole with an eight-run third inning. Seven Straight Garden City batters reached. Ryanna Johnson doubled, Kayden Rodgers singled, Chacon laced a two-run extra base hit, Lacey Kearsley reached on an error, Alanna Neilsen ripped a shot down the line, and Griebling blasted a three-run bomb to put the Broncbusters in front. Three batters later, another run scored after Ashanti Thompson booted (Ryanna) Johnson's ground ball to make it 8-6.
Kearsley then held off the Saints over the final four innings, replacing starter Alexis Garcia, who was roughed up for five runs on six hits in 1 2/3. But the sophomore right hander stopped the bleeding, striking Tatum Winters to end the second. After surrendering a run in the third, she allowed just one the rest of the way, stabilizing the staff while Garden City's offense sprung to life.
In the sixth, the Broncbusters added some insurance when Chacon hit a two-run homer. Alexis Maestretti followed with an RBI double, and Griebling homered for the second time, giving Garden City a seven-run cushion.
Garden City slugged out 15 hits with Chacon, Rodgers, and Griebling combining for nine knocks.
Ashanti Thompson took the loss for Seward County, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 3 2/3.
