Broncbusters Go 2–0 on Day 1 in Midwest City

Midwest City, OK – Garden City Community College softball opened play at the Visit Midwest City Tournament with a pair of hard-fought victories Friday, outlasting Frank Phillips College in a high-scoring battle before edging Vernon College in a tight one-run contest.
The Broncbusters showed offensive firepower in Game 1 and composure in the circle in Game 2, starting tournament play 2–0 in Midwest City.
Game 1: Garden City 11, Frank Phillips 10
The opener quickly developed into an offensive shootout, with both teams trading momentum swings throughout the seven innings. Garden City struck early with two runs in the first and continued to apply pressure, but Frank Phillips answered with multiple multi-run innings to keep the game tight.
Izzy Foster delivered one of her strongest performances of the season, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, consistently coming through in key situations. Maiarangi Waipara added a three-run home run of her own, while Reagan Sword doubled and drove in two. Isabella Stevenson-Del Torto contributed an RBI, and the Broncbusters worked seven walks to create scoring opportunities.
In the circle, Skylah Breeze Joyce set the tone early with four strong innings and eight strikeouts. Frank Phillips rallied late with home runs in the fifth and seventh, but Garden City's timely hitting and ability to respond under pressure sealed the narrow 11–10 win .
Game 2: Garden City 5, Vernon College 4
The second game featured a different rhythm, with Garden City breaking through in the third inning. The Broncbusters plated four runs in the frame, capitalizing on aggressive baserunning and timely hits to seize control.
Maysen Kurene-Iwikau led the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Maiarangi Waipara added two RBI of her own. Averie Ashford reached base and drove in a run, and Izzy Foster chipped in an RBI as well. Garden City remained aggressive on the basepaths, swiping multiple bags to pressure Vernon's defense.
Vernon chipped away late, but Valeria Mandujano delivered a steady performance in the circle, tossing 5.1 innings and limiting damage despite traffic on the bases. Samantha Torres and Ashlyn Powell combined to close out the final outs, preserving the 5–4 victory .
Garden City displayed resilience in both styles of game—winning a slugfest in the opener and grinding out a close contest in the afternoon. The Broncbusters continue to show depth throughout the lineup and poise in late-game situations.
Next Up: The Broncbusters return to action Saturday in Midwest City, facing North Dakota State College of Science at 9:00 AM before taking on Kirkwood Community College at 1:00 PM.
