Liberal, KS – Garden City Community College used a balanced offensive attack and a dominant outing in the circle to roll past Seward County, 10-1, in Game 1 of a conference doubleheader Sunday at French Family Field.
The Broncbusters (19-16, 6-7) scored in four different innings and piled up 12 hits, while limiting Seward County to just four hits in a complete-game effort from Skylah Breeze Joyce.
Garden City wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Danna Viera led off with a single and later scored on a Seward County error before Zoey Torres added an RBI single to give the Broncbusters a 2-0 lead.
Seward County answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but that would be the lone blemish for Joyce, who settled in to strike out eight over six innings and earn the win.
The Broncbusters extended their lead in the third inning behind the power of Maiarangi Waipara, who delivered an inside-the-park two-run home run to make it 4-1.
Garden City broke the game open in the fourth inning with a four-run surge. Maysen Kurene-Iwikau highlighted the frame with a three-run home run, and Waipara followed with her second homer of the game to push the lead to 8-1.
Kurene-Iwikau and Waipara led the offensive charge, each driving in three runs, while combining for four hits and two home runs. Averie Ashford added a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Viera chipped in two hits and two runs scored.
